Famed as the London of the West, Bristol embodies the best of London’s culture without the crowds, making it the perfect place for a weekend getaway in South West England.

Things to do in Bristol

Take in the industrial sights
To begin your Bristol getaway, take in some of England’s most profound industrial sites, including the expansive Clifton Suspension Bridge that you would’ve seen before on most postcard photos of the city. The bridge floats more than 100-metres above water level and began construction in 1831. If it’s Bristol’s maritime heritage that interests you, continue the journey with a visit to Underfall Yard on Spike Island where you can explore an array of old boats dating back hundreds of years to when Bristol was a transportation hub, more so than now. If you prefer train tracks, Avon Valley Railway has some fantastic year-round themed events that offer heaps of fun for the whole family, as well as schools.

Explore Bristol Zoo
If you’re travelling with children, Bristol Zoo is a welcome sight but, at 12-acres, will occupy an entire day. The zoo has over 50 species of mammal, including gorillas, hippos, and red pandas. There is also an array of indoor exhibits such as the aquarium and reptile centre. The zoo has an on-site restaurant where you can enjoy lunch and a variety of shows to take in throughout the afternoon. Tickets start at £11 for children between the age of 2-14 and little ones under 2-years-old go free, as do carers.

Wander by the water
If it’s water you love, you’ll want to swing by Bristol harbour and visit the historic SS Great Britain. From 1845 to 1854, the SS Great Britain was the longest passenger ship in the world. Today, the ship houses a large museum with fun and insightful exhibits for the whole family to enjoy. Bristol harbour is the perfect place to stop for lunch while overlooking the water and watching boats come in and out. If you’re visiting Bristol on a weekend, between 11am-4pm you can visit The Harbourside Market that boasts brilliant food, produce, and crafts from local traders and artisans – a fantastic spot to pick up a souvenir or two for friends and family alike.

Admire the architecture
If you want to stay on dry land, you may prefer to overload on history while strolling through the centre of Bristol, visiting beautiful architectural sights such as Queen Square, Georgian House, or the numerous churches. Most of Bristol’s sights are surrounded by kitsch cafes where you can enjoy a traditional English breakfast or an afternoon pint, so be sure to take advantage of Bristol’s full offering during your trip. If you’re in the city for several days, we recommend taking one day to explore all of Bristol’s architectural sights – there are many and you won’t want to leave any stone unturned.

Soak in the culture
On the water’s edge in Bristol city centre sits Arnolfini, a contemporary art gallery that is sure to brighten up your day. In addition to hosting a range of renowned exhibitions, the Bristol arts centre often puts on live shows that include readings and live music, so do check their official website before heading to Bristol for a memorable afternoon or evening. After, for a hint of history, head to Red Lodge Museum, a 16th-century house with Tudor and Georgian rooms that will give you a feel of Bristol’s rich past.

Find the perfect summer spot
If you visit Bristol in summer, Brandon Hill is the perfect spot for a picnic and offers a lush green space you can relax on while enjoy sweeping views of Bristol. Atop the hill, basked in sunlight, sits Cabot Tower which was opened to the public in 1897 to “commemorate the 400th anniversary of John Cabot’s voyage from Bristol to Newfoundland in 1497.” While strolling in Brandon Hill park, watch out for frogs and newts in the pond and jay and bullfinch birds soaring above. Brandon Hill is popular with locals and tourists alike so do not hesitate in taking the kids and kicking a ball around for an afternoon.
